Chunking It Up 1.0 Style

In Object Oriented Education, I covered a couple thoughts on making education better by combining the best of the old and the new. One way is making self responsible education chunks that anybody can use. That's something I'm working on right now by designing and creating a content module creator.

In game design this would be a cross between many game elements. Content, UI, gameflow and many others are interwoven into those critical moments where the user/player needs to learn a specific piece of information. Outside the game there are faqs that cover the information. Personally I'm a fan of wikis, and took inspiration from the TiddlyWiki.

The First Step

Rather than wait till I have a fully functional Web 2.0 version of my ideas publicly available, I'm going to take the first step and make a Web 1.0 version of the authoring tools. It's still a pretty big step, as it will be my first publicly used piece of code.

As the design stands right now, it has a decently robust set of features that I should be able to implement. Those include nested "chunks" and a way to easily update the content.

The Design

Obviously there is the main content, but that's there either way. It's the alternate content, links and ability to push a button and quote the resource that makes this really interesting. Alternate content can be many things from definitions to the content of other pages. Sections of text can become chunks of content with other chunks. Links to other pages and resources can be very helpful when looking for an answer, or saving time authoring a resource. Quoting comes in handy when citing is needed. Personally, I think it'd be useful while blogging to have for other people's posts. Hit a button, choose the text, hit "done" and have a fully cited quote with a link and everything.

The Services

Basically there are three services I have planned, or one with two options. A module creator is the base. Add to this the ability to submit a previous module to be updated and the option of nesting modules within modules, and I think that should give plenty of room for creativity by authors. I'm not sure why, but somebody might want to have a multi-layered set of content modules. Why should I stand in their way if they want to experiment?

The Next Step

The next step is to go 2.0, hopefully. Unfortunately it may just be supporting info and such to help people network their individual chunks by outgoing links. Ajax and a wiki are my goals to make this a read/write service that is more flexible and scalable.

The Vision

I have a hunch that given the features, this will be used for many things with ajax libraries hosted in many places. In regards to education, hopefully this will be a way for institutions to get into the openness swing, since this could be used for showing superiority. It is also a way for students to take an active part in their education, by helping to provide better modules for their courses. non-institutional efforts could be made for the same ends. Truth is that it is a technique for content networking.

Have fun, spread the word and tell me what you think,
