Textbook Revolution
Flat World Knowledge
Freeload Press
The reason I say free textbooks show the future is simply that the people who know are sharing their knowledge with those who want to know, for free. This is a big part in social media such as blogs, wikis, forums and the many bookmarking sites like Digg. More over it is common to the technical and educational social groups, official and unofficial. There's more to this than just textbooks.
It's Already Happening
Like I said already, this is normal in several of the popular social medias. So, rather than taking this as a fad or new idea, it would be better to take this as a normal part of groups. Knowledge is imparted for the sake of the group, provider and receiver. Depends on the situation for which of those three apply.
It would take a long time to go over all the different examples of this, but I'll share a couple to give an idea what I mean. Faqs and cheats for games are so popular many websites are devoted to this and subsets of it. How-to guides can be found for almost anything.
It's Cost Effective
Helping people increases your reputation, network and the abilities of others. Sometimes a little money is needed to keep things running smoothly. Yet, that's not the biggest point of openness. The big deal with openness is the sharing and improving.
Both education and entertainment have become costly. How many businesses are just looking to increase profits? That's not cost effective. That's greedy. Being cost effective is socially ethical and responsible. One reason is that the more money sitting around gathering dust, the less money that is circulating through the economy. The other reason is when the service or product is beneficial to the populous, limiting the availability is limiting the beneficial scope. The fewer who get help, the fewer who can give help.
Have fun, spread the word and tell me what you think,
